This homeowner in Greenfield, MA called us with concerns about the cost of his energy bills. When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived at the home, he noted that the homeowner had insufficient attic and basement insulation. He specifically focused on the insufficient fiberglass insulation in the rim joist. The “rim joist” is the perimeter of the floor framing system along the exterior of the house.
Fogarty's Home Services was able to help this customer by removing the old insulation and replacing it with spray foam. We first removed all of the fiberglass, bagging it and taking it to our dumpster. We then re-insulated using two-part expanding spray foam. This spray foam expands and seals all cracks, air leaks, and crevices to ensure the most effective insulation value.
This homeowner called us hoping to get her daughter's 10 x 10 shed insulated. The daughter was hoping to use the shed as a studio and was looking to insulate it before finishing it. Heat moves from more to less - out of a building in winter, and into a building in summer. Insulation is needed to slow this heat flow down - the slower the better. Fiberglass insulation does a poor job stopping heat flow because it allows air to flow through and around it. Results - Uncomfortable spaces, high fuel and electric costs for heating and cooling.
We were able to help this customer using closed cell spray foam! Closed cell spray foam is very different. Because it adheres to all surfaces, expands in place, and air cannot pass through it, it not only stops air flow through all the holes and cracks in the building assembly and materials, but it is superior insulation. With an R-value of 6.3 per inch (double or triple of fiberglass) and it’s ability to stop air flow, you simply can’t get better insulation. One inch of closed cell foam sprayed in place is worth many inches of other insulation materials. This is why spray foam is used in most “zero energy” homes. Closed cell spray foam weighs 2 lbs per cubic foot. Special equipment is used to spray it. People and pets must vacate the structure during installation and for 24 hours or more after installation to vent the space. Results - A much more comfortable interior space, less drafts, space is easier to heat and cool.
This homeowner in Greenfield, MA called us looking for help with her basement. She stated that she wanted a "basement makeover". Her basement was cold in the winter and damp in the summer. She wanted comfortable, usable space for her home. When our Home Comfort Specialist came out to the home, he noted that in addition to the basement, they had a crawl space under the home. They were having issues with humidity, musty odors, and cold floors, and almost all of those problems originated in the crawl space!
We were able to help this customer! One of the solutions we utilized was our CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation system. We first insulated the walls using our SilverGlo™ foam insulation. For the floor, we added a dimpled drainage mat to create a thermal break. We then installed TerraBlock™ floor insulation on top of that. Then, we installed a CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation liner over that insulation. We fastened it into both the walls and floor to create a permanent solution for this crawl space. We then added two-part expanding spray foam to the rim joist to ensure that the crawl space was covered. Combined with our other solutions, this homeowner will experience less drafts, warmer floors, lower energy bills, and a much more comfortable home!
This condo owner called us hoping that we would be able to help him. His condo association was looking into different insulation specialists due to an issue they had, and we had been referred from a friend. They were interested in replacing the insulation in their shared basement. They had fiberglass insulation, which was falling down, and they were having issues with mold in this basement as well. The fiberglass needed to be removed, the mold needed to be remediated, and then the condo association wanted new insulation put up.
We were able to insulate this basement using two separate solutions. These solutions combined gave them a very insulated condo complex, but also, they had the benefit of sound dampening as well. Our first solution was using two part spray foam in the rim joist. (The rim joist is the perimeter of the floor framing system along the exterior of the house.) This spray foam expands and fills all cracks and gaps in the rim joist and over the sill plate. Then, we installed RockWool batts on the ceiling of the basement. RockWool is amazing -- made of volcanic rock, it is fire resistant and sound dampening. The condo owners will no longer have an issue with hearing their neighbors in the basement, and they will be much more comfortable in their homes!
A customer in Middletown, CT called us in order to ensure that his attic was properly insulated. Our Home Comfort Specialist identified several places in this home that needed sealing and proper insulation. Our team used ZypFoam™ in order to properly seal the attic. We then used loosely blown TruSoft™ cellulose insulation on the attic floor and densely packed it into the exterior walls of the home. This ensures a more comfortable home. This customer will now have reduced energy loss year round!
