Fogarty's Home Services was contacted by this Gales Ferry, CT homeowner to come take a look at air flow issues in the home. We found that this home had old, dirty insulation in the attic that needed to be removed and replaced.  Attic insulation in your home can get pretty nasty. Over many years, it sits there collecting dirt, dust, pollen, bugs, rodent feces (from mice, squirrels, bats, etc.), bird droppings and nests of all kinds of undesirable things. It's possible that old insulation like this can be moved aside for a proper air sealing job that must be done prior to adding enough TruSoft™ blown cellulose insulation to today's standards - but we prefer to completely remove the old, nasty insulation from your home and start fresh. Fogarty's Home Services will conduct the unpleasant task of removing the damaged, soiled insulation in your attic. Batt insulation is bagged and then the attic is vacuumed to remove pieces, parts and dust. Loose fill insulation is vacuumed with a giant vacuum located outside with giant filter bags and a very long, fat hose. Then, we have a clean attic that is ready for proper air sealing and installation of new, fresh TruSoft™ cellulose insulation or one of our other Dr. Energy Saver strategies to make your home comfortable and energy efficient - just like we did in this happy customer's home. 

This homeowner in Gales Ferry, CT called us hoping she could get someone to take a look at her radon mitigation system. It was non-functioning and she wanted to have it checked out. When our certified radon measurement specialist came out to evaluate the system, he noted that the fan needed to be replaced. However, he also noted that there were several cracks in the floor. Cracks in a basement need to be sealed if you want to mitigate radon exposure. That is because radon can come through the cracks and into the home, circumventing the radon mitigation system.

We were able to help this customer. In addition to the fan replacement, we sealed the cracks in her basement floor. We lined the cracks on either side with painters tape. We then ensured the area was clean. After that, we went in to fill and seal the cracks using caulk. This prevents radon from entering the basement through them -- making sure that it is vented out using the mitigation system. This homeowner is much more happy now that her home's radon mitigation system is functioning! 

These homeowners in Woodstock, CT had issues with their home being cold. One of the main issues was cold air coming up through their open crawlspace. There was batt insulation in the crawlspace ceiling, but as often happens with batts, it was beginning to sag, leaving space for cold air to get up into the floors and up through the home. This issue would only get worse over time if left unchecked and the cycle will only continue if batt insulation is reinstalled.

We began by pulling out the batted insulation. We then installed our SilverGlo insulation foam across the bottom of the floor joists, or some may call the crawlspace ceiling. The foam is rigid and will not sag or pull away from the joists, there is also a radiant barrier facing on the SilverGlo which will stop conductive heat loss by keeping the warm air inside the home in. The SilverGlo is fastened into place with special long screws and any spaces between them are sealed with expanding foam.
