Ice Damming- What can be done?

Ice dams can be easily prevented with efficient air sealing and insulation in your home.

What are Ice Dams?A home in Mansfield, CT with Ice Dams!

Ice dams occur from melting and re-freezing snow on your roof. First, snow accumulates onto your roof and piles up. Next, heat from your inefficiently insulated home leaks into your attic, hits the roof, and melts the snow.

This process does not happen all at once, or in a uniform fashion. Once the snow melts, water will run down towards the gutters. Since your roof is the coldest along the edge where heat from the home isn't able to get to. When the water reaches the roof's edge, it will freeze- causing an ice dam! The water can even fill the gutters and freeze.

This can lead to snow melting and seeping beneath the roof shingles, leaking into your attic, and damaging your home!

How to Prevent Ice dams

You can't simply avoid getting snow on your roof. There are ways you can reduce and eliminate Ice damming all together. The most important thing you can do to help you home is to reduce the amount of heat that is able to escape into your attic, warming that snow and melting it!

At Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, we can help by making sure to seal up any areas in your home where this can occur. We are able to do this with proper air sealing and insulation products such as: Cellulose insulation, spray foam, Foamax/SilverGlo insulation boards, and more!

Another way to protect your home from ice dams and the damage associated with them is to make sure that an experienced roofing contractor installs a protective "ice and water" shield along your roof eaves, where the ice dams form. Click here for your roofing needs!
