This homeowner called us out Stafford Springs, CT to assess a problem they were having in their Cape Cod Style home. The problem was that they were experiencing very high fuel costs and electricity bills. Another problem was that they were uncomfortable with the temperature in their home no matter the season. It was always too cold in the winter, and never cool enough in the summer! When we arrived to the home we did a full Home Energy Evaluation to help the customer, as well as us understand why these issues were occurring. We know that most Cape Cod Style homes are inadequate insulation, this is an example of one. The attic was insulated with fiberglass insulation, which easily allows air to travel through because it is so fluffy. This wasn't keeping air from leaking into the attic, and a poorly insulated attic is the same temperature as outside. In this style attic, knee-wall spaces are a huge issue. They are dusty, and always either too hot or too cold. This is why the cost of their fuel and electricity bills were always so high.

To fix this, we need to first remove all of the old, nasty fiberglass insulation and properly dispose of the materials. We take all of the old insulation, bag it up, and rid of the materials. Once all of the old insulation is out we can start out Super Kneewall Treatment. First, we properly measure and cut our 4" SilverGlo foam board to fit. We install our SilverGlo insulation panels on the bottom of the rafters in the knee-wall spaces. Next, we have to block and seal out ceiling joist bays with one-part expanding foam foam to stop air leakage. After this, we dense pack out TruSoft cellulose insulation to stop air flow and insulate. Lastly, we need to insulate the flat part of this Cape Cod attic ceiling. We do this by blowing our TruSoft cellulose insulation. Now our treatment is complete.

Thanks to Dr Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions these homeowners can now have lower bills, and live comfortably in their homes all year round.

This homeowner in Stafford Springs, CT called us out to their home to see what we could do to make their home more energy efficient. We noticed during out Home Energy Evaluation that they had inefficient fiberglass insulation and an un-airsealed can light. Stopping air leakage at the top of the house is a priority when it comes to making a home more comfortable.  Can lights are holes in the ceiling which allow air to leak into the attic between the fixture and the drywall.  Air leaks through the fixture itself due to the many holes and seams in it.  Most can lights are not rated to have insulation against them because of the fire hazard when the fixture gets hot.  We installed our Dr. Energy Saver TiteShell can light covers.  We used our expanding foam to make these lights air tight.  These covers are safe from the fire hazards of hot bulbs and fixtures allowing cellulose insulation to be blown into the attic.

Cleaning up a Crawlspace in Stafford Springs, CT

This homeowner in Stafford Springs, CT knew he had to upgrade the insulation in his crawlspace. Even at a quick glance it is clear that the old insulation was sagging and falling off the crawlspace ceiling, which leaves space for cold air to push up into the home causing cold floors and making the home harder to heat.

We started by pulling out the old, ineffective insulation. We then installed our SilverGlo foam board with special long screws and sealed any seams. SilverGlo is not only an excellent insulator, but it's not sagging or budging any time soon.

Thanks to Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, this homeowner no longer has to worry about the cold seeping up into the home for the foreseeable future.

Job Stories From Stafford Springs, CT
Removing Insulation from an Attic in Stafford Springs, CT

This homeowner in Stafford Springs, CT reached out to us after he noticed that he had mold in his attic. He had been placing traps in his attic after the home had a flying squirrel infestation. The mold had spread to his attic insulation, and when the mold was removed he wanted the insulation replaced. Before we could replace it, we had to remove the old insulation.

We helped this customer first by removing the insulation from the attic. The batt insulation was bagged and brought to the truck for removal. Result - Now the attic is clean! It’s ready for mold removal, proper air sealing and installation of clean, new, fresh cellulose insulation to make the home comfortable and energy efficient.

Insulating an Old, Leaky Whole House Fan in Stafford Springs, CT

Before most homes had air conditioning, whole house fans mounted in the upper floor ceiling were somewhat popular. These fans would suck out a very high volume of warm air from the house, which would be replaced by incoming outside air entering open windows. Of course there was no control over how hot, cold, humid or dusty the incoming air was, but without a properly insulated house with air conditioning, there was little choice. Today, most of these whole house fans are obsolete, and never or seldom used. And once Dr. Energy Saver completes a project in a home, these fans are most certainly not needed any more. The problem is that the fan louvers leak a lot of air even when the fan is off - and for every cubic foot of air that leaks out the top of the house, a new cubic foot of cold or hot/humid outside air is sucked into the bottom of the house to replace it. In addition, the fan/louver area represents a big gap in your ceiling insulation.

Fogarty's Home Services exclusive “David Lewis Whole House Fan Cover™” (named for our engineer who developed it) is installed over your fan assembly and sealed airtight with expanding foam. It stops air leakage and insulates over the fan. Made of lightweight, high tech SilverGlo™ foam insulation, which has graphite infused into the foam to bump up the insulation value by 24% over standard EPS foam. It also has a radiant barrier (foil) on the flat top to reflect heat back in during winter and out in the summer, so the insulation isn’t doing all the work by itself. This cover is completely compatible with our TruSoft™ blown insulation in your attic. Most homeowners will never want to use their fan again, especially after other comfort improvements are made by Fogarty's Home Services. If you may want to use the fan in the future, just let your Fogarty's Home Services representative know and we will “pumpkin cut” a removable lid in the top of the cover.
