This homeowner in Millbury, MA called us out to their home to better understand and tackle their comfort issue. We sent out one of our Building Science Specialist to the home for one of our Free Home Energy Evaluations to get down to the root of their concern. When we get to the home we sit down with the homeowner to ask them some weather and comfortability questions to see where any and all of their concerns are. They were experiencing uneven temperatures throughout the home. Now, we do our walkthrough.
The Building Science Specialist and homeowner walk through the home and take a look at any spots where there may be air leakage into or out of the home, for mold, and any other comfort/energy efficiency concerns. We notice in their attic they had old, inefficient fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass does not stop airflow. We explain to the customer that if we remove the old insulation, then air seal and reinsulate the temperatures in their home will be more even, and they will be more comfortable. They decided to move forward with the work, and we get our production Crew out to the home.
Our crew preps the job making sure to cover and keep any of the homeowners' personal belongings safe and clean. Next, we go in and remove all of the old, inefficient fiberglass insulation vacuuming up any remains. We properly bag up and dispose of the materials. Next, we attack the knee walls.
We install our SilverGlo foam insulation board between the ceiling joists and under the rafters, air sealing around them with foam. This results in a more even temperature in the home as well as lower energy bills. Now we are ready for our final treatment!
We go in and air seal all of the top plates with foam. We make sure to seal all of the spots where air (that you pay to heat and cool) from your home leaks up into your attic and is lost.
